Automotive FAQ – LED lighting

General Information

What is Lumen?

Specifies the overall visible light output of a light source, which is emitted in all directions.

What is Candela?

Specifies the luminous flux, which is emitted into a certain direction.

What is Lux?

It is the measurement unit of illumination intensity. It specifies the luminous flux, which is emitted on a certain surface. At 1 lux e.g. the human eye can easily read a book.

What is IP?

The IP Code classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures.

What is ECE?

United Nations Economic Commision for Europe.

What is the Reference Number?

The reference number is a value that is related to the high beam headlight which is regulated in ECE R112. Every certified high beam headlight has a reference number marked on it either left or right to the E-mark sign. According to ECE R112 the sum of all reference numbers of high beam headlights attached to the car must not exceed a total of 100.

What is an E-Mark?

An E-Mark has to be put on a product if it fullfills at least one category of the ECE regulation. Example and explanation:

  • H: Halogen/LED
  • D: Xenon
  • C: Low beam
  • R: High beam
  • PL: Plastic lens
  • 2439: Approval number
  • Arrow left right: left- and right-hand driving
  • 30: Reference number
  • E4: Granted approval in Netherlands

LEDriving replacement bulbs: LED retrofits

LED bulbs offer a multitude of advantages, including their distinctive cool white light, which gives cars a modern look. Thanks to their instant light output, they provide faster signals and thus enable drivers behind you to react faster. In addition, they are characterized by their long lifetime and high energy efficiency compared to conventional bulbs.

All OSRAM LEDriving fog and signal bulbs – as well as OSRAM LEDriving HL EASY bulbs for high and low beam replacements – are plug-and-play solutions.

This makes installing these bulbs as easy as it gets. OSRAM LEDriving HL BRIGHT and LEDriving HL INTENSE high and low beam replacement bulbs can be easily installed with an adapter and/or caps. However, there are specific vehicle restrictions for them.

This problem only affects bulbs from our LEDriving HL and LEDriving SL product ranges. Check the bulbs' polarity and its contacts for corrosion. If your LED bulb does not turn on, you probably need to:

  1. Remove the LED bulb from the housing.
  2. Rotate the bulbs by 180°.
  3. Put it back in the housing.
  4. Make sure the LED is on.

For more information, please refer to the user instruction.

Due to their higher level of energy efficiency, LEDriving replacement bulbs use significantly less power than traditional bulbs. This lack of power consumption could be interpreted as a broken bulb by the body control unit. The LEDriving SMART CANBUS and LEDriving CANBUS CONTROL UNIT serve as a bypass of a vehicle’s bulb failure detection system when using a LEDriving replacement bulb without compromising on the bulb’s performance or lifetime. The control units are easily installed and suitable for most vehicle models with an automatic bulb failure detection system.

LED bulbs are significantly more robust than conventional bulbs and are therefore easy to handle. You only have to avoid touching the LED chips as they are heat-sensitive.

We offer dedicated solutions for fog ( LEDriving FL) as well as high and low beam ( LEDriving HL BRIGHT) application. While LEDriving HL BRIGHT have been designed for optimum performance in far-field application, LEDriving FL bulbs are ideal for near-field application.

These products do not have ECE approval and must not be used on public roads in any exterior application. Public roads use leads to cancellation of operating license and loss of insurance coverage. Several countries forbid sale and use of these products. Please contact your local distributor for further information.

LEDriving HL replacement bulbs are compatible with 12 V vehicles. LEDriving HL EASY bulbs are compatible with cars and motorcycles, however, we also have a dedicated LEDriving HLM motorcycle portfolio and for 24 V, a dedicated truck portfolio: LEDriving HLT.

LEDriving HL high and low beam bulbs are not equipped with an internal resistor due to the negative effect on the bulbs’ performance and lifetime. Furthermore, additional resistors are not necessary for all car models or applications.

LEDriving HL high and low beam bulbs do have limitations in terms of compatibility. Please consult our vehicle overview at www.osram.com/ledcheck to see if your LEDriving HL bulbs are compatible with your vehicle.

LED Driving Lights

Can I install the driving light by myself?

The driving ligths can be installed by a technically skilled person. We recommend that people with no training have the installation done by a service centre.

My driving light mist up on the inside. Is this normal and what can I do to prevent it?

Since moisture can get into driving lights while driving in rain or when using a high-pressure jet at a car wash, slight misting of the driving lights is not considered to be a quality defect. The driving lights may also mist up during transitional weather. This should normally disappear after a short time by circulating air. A frequent cause of misted car lights is incorrect use of high-pressure jets while washing the car. We therefore recommend never directing the water jet directly at a driving light and keeping a distance of at least 30 cm from the car.

Do I have to consider special mounting regulations?

According to ECE regulations products need to be installed pairwise (national legislation may differ). There are no special mounting regulations on width and heigth, for pure high beam products. For products with position light, special mounting regulations apply (see user manual).

Can I wire the driving light directly to the corresponding light function?

The driving lights are fully ECE compliant and can therefore be directly wired to the corresponding light function.

Are the driving lights covered by any EMC test?

Yes, the driving lights are covered by ECE R10.

LED Working Lights

Can I install the working light by myself?

The working ligths can be installed by a technically skilled person. We recommend that people with no training have the conversion done by a service centre.

My working light mist up on the inside. Is this normal and what can I do to prevent it?

Since moisture can get into working lights while driving in rain or when using a high-pressure jet at a car wash, slight misting of the working lights is not considered to be a quality defect. The working lights may also mist up during transitional weather. This should normally disappear after a short time by circulating air. A frequent cause of misted car lights is incorrect use of high-pressure jets while washing the car. We therefore recommend never directing the water jet directly at a working light and keeping a distance of at least 30 cm from the car.

Do I have to consider special mounting regulations?

No special mounting regulations apply.

How do I have to wire the working lights?

The working lights need to be installed with a separate switch, they must not be directly wired to a light function of the car.

Are the working lights covered by any EMC test?

Yes, the working lights are covered by ECE R10.
